New Jersey Appeals and Appellate Practice
Your guide for appeals and appellate practice in New Jersey

My Background

In case you are wondering who I am . . .

Jeffrey S. Mandel, Esq. is a New Jersey-based lawyer known for handling high-profile appeals and also maintaining a law practice composed of civil litigation and criminal defense.

I attended Montville High School (
www.montville.net/highschool) in Morris County, New Jersey prior to attending college at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana (www.iub.edu).  While at IU, I focused my studies on Criminal Justice and Psychology.  In addition to being a 'pledge trainer' in Sigma Alpha Mu, I served as a criminal justice tutor and was selected for membership in Alpha Phi Sigma (the National Criminal Justice Honor Society).

I then attended Seton Hall Law School in Newark, New Jersey (
http://law.shu.edu) and, upon graduation, I accepted a position as a law clerk with the Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division. (www.judiciary.state.nj.us).

After my appellate clerkship, I joined the Philadelphia-based law firm of Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP (700 lawyers).  After a few years at Drinker Biddle, I joined Day Pitney LLP (400 lawyers), where I was elevated to counsel.  In 2008, I accepted a position as partner at a litigation law firm in Morristown, New Jersey called PinilisHalpern, LLP.

Over the years, I have received several awards for my work, including the Young Lawyer of the Year award by the YLD of the New Jersey State Bar Association, named a Super Lawyer, named a Corporate Super Lawyer, and I was named one of New Jersey's Top 40 Lawyers Under the Age of 40.

I now offer my clients the services of a big firm lawyer with small firm rates and small firm personal attention.  My practice is diverse and includes representing clients in both civil litigation and criminal defense.  I have a focus on New Jersey appeals and am known throughout the State as a respected New Jersey appeals lawyer.  See sections below, In the civil context; In the criminal context; In the appellate context.

In the civil contextmy clients range from individuals to Fortune 100 companies to overseas corporations.  My 'big law firm' experience enables me to handle very large cases against other 'big law firms', and my employment with a smaller law firm now allows me to accept cases from individuals and small businesses.

-General litigation (both defendant and plaintiff)
-Employment law (discrimination and other unlawful/harassing practices in the workplace)

See also Daily Record (December 2007) article "Cops: We listened in as mobsters plotted" and article "Security high in court for gambling suspects".

In the appellate context, clients retain me solely for my experience before appellate courts. I literally wrote the book on appeals in New Jersey (Gann Law Books' "New Jersey Appellate Practice").

I am Vice-Chair of the State Appellate Practice Committee and I have argued several cases before the Appellate Division and the Supreme Court of New Jersey.  I teach appellate advocacy at Rutgers Law School in Newark, New Jersey.

Some clients retain me solely to assist their trial attorney (prior to and during trial) in anticipation of an appeal.  In this situation, I work with trial counsel to raise and preserve legal and factual issues/arguments for appeal.  Visit www.jeffmandel.com for more!
